Jura Launches Search for the World’s Best Stories

Jura Whisky has launched a search for the world’s best stories, with the chance to win two all-expenses paid trips to the 2014 Jura Whisky Festival.

Starting today (31 October), Jura Whisky is calling on all budding storytellers to submit a story in 1,000 characters or less. Every fortnight for ten weeks Jura Whisky will provide a different story theme for inspiration. The themes kick off this week with Travel Adventure, followed by Day Dreams, A Brush with Death, Into the Wild and Happily Ever After.

Art Wednesday will provide further inspiration by producing a series of videos which tell the stories of interesting, influential creatives and their work. The first two videos will feature writer Marcel Theroux and musician Nick Mulvey (previously of Portico Quartet), with more to follow.

From the competition entries, three stories will be chosen each week and turned into bespoke illustrations by creative agency Holler which will be posted on to jurawhisky.com.  At the end of the ten weeks, each of the 30 winning stories will be put to the public vote to find the favourite. Voting will remain open for two weeks.

The winner with the most votes will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to Jura for the 2014 Whisky Festival to help select the new special edition festival bottling which will be launched at the 2015 Festival. Staying in the luxurious Jura Lodge, the winner will be treated to a VIP tour, taking in all of Jura’s ‘must sees’, including a speedboat trip to the Corryvreckan whirlpool, tea on the beach and a visit to Barnhill where Orwell wrote 1984.

Gemma Parkinson, Brand Manager at Jura Whisky, said: “As the nights draw in, the residents of Jura like to settle down by the fire, pour a dram and swap a story or two. In that spirit, we have launched a season of storytelling to celebrate tales worth sharing. Some of Jura’s best and most loved stories, both real and mythical, are those that have been handed down through generations of islanders over the years. That’s why we’re on the hunt to find the world’s best stories, to celebrate and reward the art of great storytelling.”

The competition, which opens today, Thursday, 31 October, and will run right through until Friday, 10 January 2014, is part of Jura Whisky’s new ‘Story Season’ campaign. The competition is open to entrants from all countries.

For more information on Jura Whisky’s search for the world’s best stories, including detailed terms and conditions, visit www.jurawhisky.com.

How comping tweet bots work

NOTE I'm not really advocating that you should do this, for reasons I'll explain at the end, but I wanted to see how a retweet bot works so I had a play.

You may have noticed during the week from October 20th to 27th, some strange retweets appeared in my Twitter timeline, mentioning sausages and/or chips. I was doing some testing for this post, and had gone away from home for a week without switching off the test I'd set up. And I didn't have the right info with me to switch it off, so had to go through my tweets every day, undoing all the retweets I could find.

Lots of the competitions on Twitter simply ask you to retweet a particular tweet. Unfortunately, this is all too easy to automate, suing various programmes and apps, for instance one called Round Team.

You'll see increasing numbers of retweet comps being entered by "people" who appear to be tweeting over and over again, 24 hours a day. They never interact with anyone, never appear to take breaks to eat and sleep and yet still win prizes - even though they may have never even visited Twitter on the day they entered!

I tested one of these bots using the words "sausages" and "chips" but for competition entries they would choose #competition or one appropriate to a particular day like #WinningWednesday or #FreebieFriday

Once a retweet bot is set up it will look for and retweet any tweet containing the words you have specified.

Why am I advising you against doing this? Well, there are several reasons:
  • Not all competitions on Twitter are simple retweet ones - you might find yourself retweeting ones that need you to give an answer or follow a link to an entry page
  • Not all competitions on Twitter are open to the UK - tweets in English using common comping hashtags commonly come from the USA, the Republic of Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Australia and South Africa, so you may find yourself entering competitions you can't win, especially if you've paid the small fee to become a subscriber and retweet from Everyone. It's not a problem if you use the Followed option and have been careful about who you follow.
  • If you follow a lot of other compers and they retweet by the copy and paste method rather than using the retweet button, you may find yourself retweeting their entries and upsetting them.
  • It takes away the chat and interaction that is really the whole point of Twitter. And what's more, if you don't chat or interact, your tweets may be filtered out of Twitter search for being poor quality, and that means you reduce your chances of winning.

NOTE -  although the original post was really intended to explain to compers how some people are using bots to cheat, so that they knew what to look out for, and I tried to make it very clear that I did NOT endorse or recommend it in any way, it appears to have upset some people. I still feel that it is VERY important for compers  and promoters alike to know what is going on - ignorance is no protection against cheats. And I'm quite certain that anyone who wins regularly using a bot would be using a MUCH more sophisticated system than the one mentioned above. However I have removed the link to the bot-creating site and the information about how to set it up.

I've written a much more detailed article about how to recognise when tweets are coming from a bot, which you will find here. It also includes advice for promoters on how to "bot-proof" a competition. If you see a competition being won by a bot, I suggest sending the promoter a link to that article.

One final bot-spotting tip, whish appears to only work on Tweet Deck - if you click on the word "details" at the bottom of a tweet, it will tell you how the tweet was sent - through Twitter web client, a phone app, Tweet Deck, Hootsuite and so on. If it was sent  using an app such as Round Team it will show up there. One little tip that might help promoters to identify and block entries coming from bots!

Two new competitions from KLOO

You may already know that one of my daughters is married to a Panamanian man whose native language is Spanish. I've tried many times to learn a little of the language to be able to chat with his family, but I'm ashamed to say it always ends up with them speaking in English instead! My other daughter's four-year-old, probably encouraged by Dora The Explorer, does better than me. So perhaps she and I need a copy of the KLOO Learn To Speak Spanish card game so we can learn together.

And here is a chance to win a copy of the game! Just visit and Like their Facebook page then enter through the app which you will find here. The competition closes and the winner will be drawn on November 3rd.

The second competition is for a KLOO Zoo Kids' Reading Game for ages 4+. To enter this one, Like the Read With KLOO Facebook page and enter through this app. You willneed to tell them who you are teaching to read and what your favourite children's book is. This, too, is closing and being drawn on November 3rd.

The Mind Sports Festival in Prague

A FULL WEEK OF MIND SPORTS IN ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES

Prague, Czech Republic (24 October, 2013) – Mind Sports (International), part of the Living it Loving it Ltd. group of companies, is delighted to announce that it is returning to Prague for the second year running as part of its Mind Sports Festival season.  Sponsored by 888poker and taking place from December 2-8, 2013, the final mind sports festival of the year brings an extra shine to the stunning Czech capital.

With a full week of intellectual games waiting for Mind Sports enthusiasts and competitors; gamers can try their hand at Chess, Scrabble, Magic: The Gathering and eSports in events spread across the week, with hundreds of players already registered to take part.

In addition to the fantastic choice of games associated with Mind Sports (International)’s festivals, this year’s event will also host the prestigious Scrabble™ Champions Tournament.  The World’s best players have spent the past two years competing and improving their rank in order to qualify for this iconic event, with the eventual champion set to take home the ‘lion’s share’ of the $25,000 tournament prize pool.

eSports is also back, and this year the festival is incorporating the highly popular Dota 2 (Defense of the Ancients) multiplayer online battle arena video game. Running on both Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December, approximately 60 players will battle it out in teams of five until a winner is crowned. This years’ event will be managed by well-respected local eSports gurus District Prague, with other side events involving CS:GO and Call of Duty 4 to be confirmed closer to the event.

Hosted in the modern Andel’s hotel and conference space, Mind Sports (International) has also teamed up with this stunning 4-star hotel to offer a great accommodation package, at just €95 per night for a single room, or €99 per night for double occupancy, giving players a great opportunity to stay-and-play under one roof.  Located in the City centre and part of the bustling District 5, the Andel’s hotel is close to the City’s largest shopping mall which houses over 130 exclusive shops and restaurants.

Dave Brannan, CEO of Mind Sports (International) feels it was the natural choice of venue to host what has quickly become the mind sports event of the year, “Prague 2013 is coming to a fresh location and is poised to be bigger and better than before.  Expect more people, more tournaments and even more prize money.”

Brannan continues, “It is always incredibly important for us to choose a location that can offer so much more outside of the gaming arena, and Prague in December is a fantastic example of this.  The Andel’s hotel is in such a central location it is easy to take in the city’s fantastic atmosphere and architecture.”

The Prague Mind Sports Festival completes what has been a fantastic year for Mind Sports (International).  Following the first Prague festival in December last year, the company have since completed successful festivals in Vienna, Marbella, Las Vegas and Cardiff.

Full details of the requirements and how to submit your entry can be found here. You have until January 20th to submit your entry, but as the winner will be the one with the most genuine social shares (they don't say how they are going to check they are genuine - I hope they will be checking IP addresses and vote-buying sites to help eliminate cheating!) it's in your interest to enter as soon as possible to collect as many shares as you can in the time available.

The second competition is more accessible to all of us, whether bloggers or not. You could win a PS4 in time for Christmas! Go to the competition page and follow the link to their Tombolas page where there are lots of ways to collect entries by the closing date of December 15th.

You download the app, set it to your personal needs or preferences then get scanning.

All you need to do is follow them and retweet this tweet - you can follow and retweet without even leaving this page!

How to find low entry competitions

When you enter a competition the likelihood of you winning is inevitably linked to the number of other entries. In a straightforward draw, it's a simple case of odds - the more entries there are, the less chance any one given entry has to win. It's a bit more complex in a skill competition - your entry may be brilliant, but if there are thousands of other entries it stands a smaller chance of being The Best than if there are only a handful of others. Even in an instant win promotion, if the prizes are being given to the first entry after a randomly selected winning moment, you stand a better chance of being the first person to enter after that moment if you've picked a time like the early hours of the morning when few other people are entering.

So how do you go about finding potentially low entry competitions? Here are some tips:

Rejoice  in Restrictions

Unlike most areas of our lives, competition promoters are allowed to put some pretty tight restrictions on who can enter. If they want to specify the age, gender, home town or county or even marital status or sexuality of entrants, they can. And the more restricted the entrants, the more chance YOU have, if you fit the requirements.

Just imagine two identical competitions, one open to everybody and one only open to men. Only half as many people in the country are allowed to enter the second one. Now imagine those men must be aged over 45 - that reduces the number of potential entrants again. And finally imagine it is only open to people from Wales. If you are man aged over 45 living in Wales, you have a much better chance of winning that competition than one open to everybody in the country, simply because far fewer people are allowed to enter. And if you're a young woman from Wigan, just move on to the next competition, there's bound to be one tailored to you along soon!

Look Locally

Following on from that, there are a lot of competitions around that, although not specifically restricted to people from a particular area, are not likely to be seen by many people from outside the area. Your local radio station, community website, shopping centre and newspaper are the places to look. Do you know that some competitions in local newspapers don't get enough entries for them to be able to give away all the prizes?

Celebrate Complicated Comps

If all you need to do is fill in your name, email address and click "send", a competition only takes a few seconds to enter. And that's attractive in this time-poor age. So lots and lots of people will enter. As soon as even a slight complication, like answering a question, is introduced, entry numbers fall. And the more complexities are added, the more potential entrants will fall by the wayside. If you have to tackle a quiz, crossword or tiebreaker, make a Pinterest board, take a photo, make a video or create a recipe,  the number of entrants will be a tiny fraction of those that just needed the name and email address. The harder a competition is to enter, the easier it is to win.

Avoid Aggressive Advertising

If a competition is flashed on every pack on your supermarket shelf, has full page ads in newspapers and magazine, banners on scores of websites and is even mentioned in commercial breaks, it could get MILLIONS of entries.  Likewise with the survey style sites where you have to fill in a short questionnaire   to enable your entry - they are linked from almost every web portal and lifestyle site, so they have vast numbers of entries. And those ITV competitions with the huge prizes are mentioned all over the internet.  I'm not telling you to avoid such competitions completely - even with 10 million entries, yours could be the one that wins, but you've probably got a better chance of being struck by lightning. Enter if you enjoy doing it and have the time, but don't enter with any high expectation of a win.

Time is of the Essence

A competition that runs for two months leaves lots of time for people to enter. One that only runs for two days will, therefore, only get a fraction of the number of entries. Keep an eye on your Facebook pages feed ad your Twitter timeline for very short notice competitions, often only lasting an hour or two. And add the blogs you read regularly to a feed like Bloglovin (see the Bloglovin button to the right of this blog) so you can quickly check them all every day to see if they have anything new, as lots of blogs have competitions that only run for a few days.

Hail Your Other Hobbies

.....if you have time for any, that is. Or any other special interests you might have such as politics, your religion or your job. There are websites and magazines dedicated to all kinds of interests and these often run competitions that are really only of interest to people with that interest - people like you! After all, who would want a Widget-wobbler apart from somebody whose hobby is wobbling widgets?

Don't Scorn the Small Stuff

Big prizes are wonderful. I love winning holidays and have had some amazing ones. But a competition with a holiday prize, or any other big ticket item, will be very tempting even to non compers and may well draw in hundreds of thousands of entries. If the prize is small - a book, a DVD, toiletries or a toy, for instance, it won't attract anywhere near as many entries, giving you a much better chance of winning. And small prizes make lovely unexpected treats, or can be set aside for birthday and Christmas presents.

Finally Don't be Confused by the Odds. Lots of competitions, especially on blogs, now use Rafflecopter. Some people running the competitions like to make it look as if they've had a lot more entries than they have - maybe to impress a sponsor or maybe just to maker themselves feel good. So it can look as if there are huge numbers of entries. You might be put off when you see that a competition has 8,400 entries, but if you look more closely you might see that you can enter in 12 different ways,  each of them with 10 entries allocated to it. So entering all 12 would give you 120 entries - and a very attractive 1 in 70 chance of winning.

And don't forget, in any competition, it only takes one entry to be a winner - if yours is the one drawn out of the hat, it no longer matters how many others there were, because they are all left behind and YOU WON!

Two different ways to win a great retro Brick mobile phone

The Brick is a great new mobile phone - looking like the brick style phones of the 1980s but with today's technology. And you can enter to win one in two different ways.

First of all, they have won to be won on Twitter: simply follow them and retweet this tweet

They will draw a winner when they reach 1,500 followers. At the moment (the morning of October 9th) they have over 1,200 so are nearly there!

Your second chance is on Facebook where you need to like their page and fill in the form which you can find here. They have 5 phones top give away and will close the competition when they reach 2,000 entries - as I type, they have just over 400 so let's all get over there and support them - the sooner they hit the 2,000 mark, the sooner those phones will be won!

Win an overnight hotel stay with Sun Life Direct

Sun Life Direct are giving away an overnight stay for two in a choice of 100 hotels. All you need to do is follow them on Twitter and  retweet this tweet  - they'll be picking the winner when they reach 2,500 followers and as they already have almost 2,200 that won't take long at all.

Here is the tweet, so you can follow and retweet direct from this page (as always, this only works if you are actually visiting the Grape Vine page, not if you are reading by email or in a feed)

Tuesday 8 October 2013

Win a £200 women's Superdry bundle

Superdry are giving away a £200 bundle of women's accessories in a Twitter draw when they reach 60,000 followers - they currently have over 53,000. To enter, all you need to do is follow then and retweet this tweet. I've embedded the tweet here so you can do your following and retweeting right away, before you forget!

The competition closes when they reach 60,000 followers. You only need to retweet once - from the rules:

Only one re-tweet will be needed to enter the PrizeDraw. Multiple re-tweets, duplicates or shares of other user’s tweets will not be deemed a valid entry and multiple entries in a single day will not be accepted. Do not create additional twitter accounts for the sole purpose of entering this Prize Draw.

So if somebody else retweets your entry - or you retweet somebody else's - it won't be entered into the draw. But as long as you've made one correct retweet, you'll still be in the virtual hat. Wouldn't it be lovely if all Twitter competitions had such clear and fair rules?

Saturday 5 October 2013

Are you suddenly getting lots of Retweet notifications?

You may have been alarmed recently to see that the number of notifications about retweets you get on Twitter has soared dramatically. If you have email notifications set up, your inbox may well be full of them, and if you look at your @ connect section on your Twitter home page, you may think that some other compers have gone crazy retweeting you.

But don't worry, it's just one of Twitter's "improvements" - Twitter seems to think we want to know every little thing our friends do! So they now tell us when somebody retweets something that we ourselves have retweeted, in much the same way as Facebook tells us if one of our friends comments on a status we've commented on.

Rach at Into the Postbox has given us a very clear explanation of what's going on and why there's no need to worry - I recommend that you all go over there and read it NOW!

And if despite all our reassurances, the notifications still bother you, you can
  • switch off email notifications so you don't get overwhelmed with emails
  • only look at the "mentions" rather than "interactions" in your @connect area
  • use an app that doesn't show them - I don't see them on Tweet Deck or on Twitter for iPad

But if there is anything you would like to ask before signing up, you can ask a question on the wall of the Facebook page or through their Twitter page.
