Win a bag for life
Those of you who read my other blog, Onions and Paper, will probably be familiar with my monthly cooking nightmares for the Random Recipes challenge; just about everything that can go wrong with a dish seems to have done so in at least one of my entries. The challenge has become my culinary nemesis. But Dom, who hosts Random Recipes, doesn't just do it to torture me! His blog, Belleau Kitchen, is packed with wonderful recipes and reviews, and the occasional competition too.
He's just launched a competition to win one of two Pro-Cook Bags for Life - useful, sturdy hessian shopping bags which generate a 50p charity donation for each one sold. To enter, visit the competition page and use the Rafflecopter form. But hurry, the closing date is June 27th.

Facebook Scams - rearing their ugly heads again!
Wherever there are compers, there will be scammers hovering, looking for a chance to take advantage of us. They may want to get hold of personal details to sell on, they may want to get mobile phone numbers to send expensive-to-receive text messages, they may want to hack into our computers or bank accounts, or they may just want to cause as much inconvenience as possible to as many people as possible, out of some warped sense of fun. And no Facebook, they may be simply looking to artificially boost page likes, either from vanity or in the hope of then selling the page on the black market to somebody undesirable, who will then appear in your timeline if you've liked the original page.
I've blogged about scam and fake competitions several times before - see
Is this a genuine competition?
Tis the season to be scammed!
and
URGENT - another Facebook scam competition
It's worth revisiting all these articles but here are ten top tips to help you spot scams.
I've blogged about scam and fake competitions several times before - see
Is this a genuine competition?
Tis the season to be scammed!
and
URGENT - another Facebook scam competition
It's worth revisiting all these articles but here are ten top tips to help you spot scams.
1. scant or no contact details in the page's profile- look at the "About" section. There should be contact details including a website and ideally also an address
2. large prizes – phones, tablets, even cars - which are not the firm's own product
3. no sign of where their income comes from - no apparent selling, advertising or sponsorship
4. little or nothing on the page other than competitions
5. scant or no terms and conditions
6. generic photos of “prizes” which appear on multiple pages - come on, own up, just how many times have you seen that photo of the white BMW with the red ribbon on top?
7. pages that appear to be a well known company such as Argos or Tesco that only have competitions on them and no sign of other customer interactions
8. pages that have only been active for a few weeks yet already have tens of thousands of fans
9. getting people to invite friends to a private event with a huge number of prizes - one doing the round at the moment offers 10,000 Galaxy Tabs
10. Winners announcements, if any, that elicit no response from the winner.
There is an excellent article on Hoax Slayer about why these scams operate and what they hope to gain from you and a You Tube video exposing the fraudulent claims of one of the current scam pages can be seen here - and when you go to You Tube to watch the video, you will see links to yet more videos about scams and hoaxes - it's going on all the time, all over the world.
The best thing to do if you spot a page like this is to unlike it, if you've liked it, and use the Report Page button (you'll find it in the three dots menu at the top right of the page, next to where it says Share). Also if any of your friends like the page, it will show that in the Likes section - warn them that it is a scam.
Recently on Facebook we've also seen several instances of another type of scam - pages that belong to genuine small businesses who run a competition that gains them lots more followers, but the prize turns out to be given to a friend or family member of the owner or an employee of the company. Sometimes it is very blatant - in a recent case, the prizewinner's own profile said "Works at [name of company]" so they didn't do a very good job of trying to cover up their fraud! The whole purpose of a "competition" like this is to boost their page followers and hopefully get new customers. An unscrupulous business owner might think that nobody will spot their ruse, and it could be a very cheap form of advertising. After all, if the prize goes to their sister, son or tea lady, it's probably only handed over to them for as long as it takes to post the photo - then it's going straight back onto the shelf to be sold!
What should you do if you see, or suspect, this happening? Well, the answer is NOT to write on the wall of the page or that of the alleged fake winner. Why not? Well, if somebody is morally dubious enough to run a fake competition, they are also morally dubious enough to either cover the fact up, by deleting your posts or blocking you from posting, or to deny it outright. They're not going to say, "Oh dear, we made a mistake, we'll award the prize to a genuine entrant after all!". It is far better to report them to the ASA, who will investigate them. Although the ASA doesn't have the power to make them award a prize retrospectively, hopefully the investigation will shake them up and make them realise that they can't defraud the general public and yet still expect to get their custom.
And once again, tell all your friends about the fraud, especially those who like the page and may have entered. The great thing about Facebook is that news can spread virally, so lets use it among compers to help to protect each other!

QUICK - win £15 today (June 19) only
England fans set to cash-in on Uruguay match day celebrations using Scoopshot app
Online image portal allows supporters to sell their weird and wonderful
party pictures to media outlets worldwide
Helsinki, Finland, June 18, 2014 – Scoopshot (www.scoopshot.com), the global leader in crowdsourced mobile photo and video content, will launch two new UK tasks today (June 19) to find the most eye-catching images of fans enjoying and enduring tomorrow’s England vs. Uruguay match in Sao Paulo. Scoopshooters also have the opportunity to sell their best images to national and international media looking for the most dynamic crowdsourced photographs of the tournament.
Ahead of tomorrow’s match, Scoopshot is encouraging its users to upload images of dogs wearing England kits as well as England fans celebrating during their 2nd Group match against Uruguay. The images can then be sold to outlets looking for copyright-free images to illustrate stories or campaigns with photos. Task photos and video are available to media, marketers and bloggers to enhance their content after a private task closes, usually 3 – 7 days after the task launch.”
As an extra incentive to England fans, Scoopshot is offering £15 to smartphone photographers who upload the best celebrations during tomorrow’s game and their cute canines in England kits. If there are no goals, the prize will be offered to the supporters who most convincingly conceal their disappointment. Global tasks are taking place throughout the tournament, with images purchased by a wide range of media outlets after being uploaded onto Scoopshot’s online portal (www.scoopshot.com/v2/tasks). Over 100 scoopshooters will receive a cash prize during the tournament with 18 photo assignments in total.
The Daily Express, Evening Standard, Daily Star and OK magazine have all purchased a wide range of images from Scoopshot in recent weeks. Outlets have sourced everything from Eurovision party images to breaking news stories. One scoopshooter recently captured the first picture of police arriving at the Shard in London on June 5 when smoke was seen coming from below, setting a new world record for user generated content publication. Tasks can also be set by brands and outlets seeking specific images.
All images sourced through Scoopshot are proved genuine and copyright free and are subject to a thorough authentication process examining geographical location, exchangable image file format (EXIF) data and resolution before its ID number and photographer name are embedded into the image. The media file is then transferred directly to the Scoopshot servers without any possibility of image manipulation. This process offers editors confidence in the authenticity of crowdsourced photographs and significant savings on costly stock images.
Scoopshot CEO Petri Rahja said: “With the vast number of copyright issues surrounding large sporting events, media outlets and advertisers have had to become even more creative in the way they use images to illustrate articles and brand campaigns. This has led to a huge increase in demand for crowdsourced images which provide the media with unique alternative while also offering amateur smartphone photographers the opportunity to cash-in on their work.
“The popularity of Scoopshot shows a shift in the media landscape as publications and brands look away from generic images to differentiate by sourcing user-generated content. In the news-sphere this can be anything from sourcing fun images of pets watching sporting events right through to using a smartphone photographer’s images to illustrate a breaking news story,” highlights Rahja.
Over 535,000 users across 177 countries currently use Scoopshot and over 70 major media outlets use the service to source images and videos of breaking news stories and images for advertising. One mobile photographer alone has earned over £17,000 by selling images to major media outlets. Individual photos can be sold for up to £5,000.

How do you remember?
The Memorial Awareness Board (MAB) invites you to commemorate the centenary year of the First World War with a national photography competition.
30th May 2014 –(London, UK): MAB, the leading campaigning organization for sympathetic memorialization, is proud to be joining forces once again with Lodge Brother’s Funeral Directors, for the 2014 MAB Annual Photography Competition. Launch date is on the 30th May with entries closing on 31st July, with the winner to be announced on 1st September.
Now in its fifth year, this critically acclaimed competition calls on novices and professional photographers alike, to capture the beauty of stone memorials from the past and the present. This year’s theme commemorates the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War and will invite photographers to feature memorials which best represent their understanding of the First World War. With the chance to win a £1,000 entrants must send in one photograph accompanied by 50 words, which explain the reasoning behind their choice of image.
Originally founded in 1984, the Memorial Awareness Board is a leading industry body which campaigns for the continuance and importance of memorialization. Campaigns are focused on the upkeep and protection of UK cemeteries and also support UK stonemasons, by providing a hub of information for the general public, academics, local government and the media on the benefits and beauty of stone memorials.
Chris Lodge, a member of the MAB Executive, said: – “Memorials play an important part in our social history whether they are personal or public. This year’s theme will enable entrants to share their images of family headstones or village cenotaphs, all of which will tell a story and allow us to remember the sacrifice made so by many in the First World War”.
